Arched Mirrors

An arched mirror is a mirror whose frame rises to a curved top rather than a square corner, borrowing the shape of a window or doorway. These run 20 to 40 inches wide and 25 to 74 inches tall, in gold, black, silver and natural finishes across metal, aluminum and composite frames.

Why the arch works

An arch reads as an opening rather than an object. The curve at the top is the same profile as a window or a doorway, so the eye treats the mirror as something to look through instead of a panel hung on the surface. That is why an arched mirror makes a wall feel less solid than a rectangle of identical size does.

What sizes are here?

20 to 40 inches wide and 25 to 74 inches tall. Most of this range sits between 30 and 49 inches on its longest side, which is wall-mirror territory: big enough to anchor a console or a dresser without needing floor space. A smaller group runs past 50 inches, and those are the full length pieces you dress in front of.

Which arched mirror for which job?

Under about 30 inches tall, an arch works above a vanity or in a tight hallway where a full rectangle would crowd the wall. Between 30 and 49 inches it is a standard wall mirror and hangs above furniture. Past 50 inches it becomes a dressing mirror and should be hung low or leaned. Match the piece to the job before you choose the finish.

Hang or lean?

Most of these hang and a smaller number are built to lean. A leaning arch needs a flat bottom edge and enough frame depth to sit stable, and the listing states which are built for it. Any arched mirror that leans still gets strapped to a wall stud at the top rail, because a tall curved frame has a small contact patch on the floor and tips more easily than a rectangle.

How do you hang an arched mirror?

Two fixings, level with each other, roughly a third of the way down from the top. An arch is not symmetrical top to bottom, so its weight sits lower than the outline suggests and a single hook lets it tilt. Getting an arch visibly out of true is easier than with a rectangle, because the curve gives the eye a strong reference line.

How high should it hang?

Centre the glass 57 to 60 inches from the floor for the wall-mirror sizes. For anything past 50 inches tall, hang it low instead, with the bottom of the glass 12 to 18 inches off the floor so it shows your feet. Above a console or dresser, leave 4 to 8 inches between the furniture top and the frame.

Finishes and frames

Gold, black, silver, brass, bronze, walnut, oak and natural. Frame material varies across metal, aluminum and composite, so check the individual listing for what a given mirror is built from rather than assuming from the finish: a gold arch here may be metal or a composite moulding, and each product page says which.

Are arched mirrors still in style?

The arch has moved from a trend to a standard format, which is a different thing. It appears now in plain thin-framed versions as often as in the heavy ornate ones that drove the original wave, and the plain versions date far more slowly. The range here reflects that, running from simple metal outlines to carved and beaded frames.

Frequently asked questions

How do you hang an arched mirror?
Use two fixings set level with each other, about a third of the way down from the top. An arch is not symmetrical top to bottom, so its weight sits lower than the outline suggests and a single hook lets it tilt. The curve gives the eye a strong reference line, so any tilt shows immediately.
Are arched mirrors in style?
The arch has moved from a trend into a standard format, which is a different thing and a more durable one. It now appears in plain thin-framed versions as often as the heavy ornate ones that drove the original wave, and those plain versions date far more slowly.
How do you hang a heavy mirror?
Use a French cleat fixed across two studs. The cleat is two interlocking angled rails, one on the wall and one on the mirror, and it carries far more than a hook because the load presses into the wall rather than pulling straight down on a single fixing. Above roughly 40 pounds, treat this as the minimum.
How do you mount an arched mirror on the wall?
Mounting fixes the mirror flush rather than suspending it. Use the brackets supplied, fixing top and bottom into studs or toggle bolts, and check for level after the first bracket rather than at the end. Flush mounting suits the taller arches, which are heavy and awkward to adjust once up.
How high should an arched mirror hang?
Centre the glass 57 to 60 inches from the floor for the wall-mirror sizes. For the pieces over 50 inches tall, hang low instead, with the bottom of the glass 12 to 18 inches off the floor so it shows your feet. Above a console, leave 4 to 8 inches between the furniture and the frame.
Can an arched mirror lean against the wall?
Some are built to and some are not, and the listing states which. A leaning arch needs a flat bottom edge and enough frame depth to sit stable. Any arch that leans still gets strapped to a wall stud at the top rail, because a tall curved frame has a small floor contact patch and tips easily.
