Desk sizes, from small desks to L-shaped desks

A desk sets the shape of a working room, so start with the wall it will sit against. Measure it, then take off the three feet or so a chair needs to push back before anyone can stand up.

These run 18.5 to 118 inches wide and 13.8 to 59.8 deep. A small desk under 44 inches slips into a bedroom corner or a hallway. Over 55 inches, or an L-shape, is what you want when two monitors and a notepad have to sit side by side.

Standard desk height and the clearance underneath

Depth is the measurement people skip and the one that decides comfort. Under 20 inches a monitor sits too close to look at all day, and no amount of width makes up for it.

Desks sit 29 to 30 inches off the floor, and office chairs are built to meet that. The check is simple: forearms level with the surface, feet flat on the floor. The number people forget is the clearance underneath, which decides whether a tall person gets their legs under the desk at all, and a wide center drawer eats into it.

Desks with drawers, a hutch or a charging station

Drawers sized for hanging folders keep the filing off the surface, and letter and legal are different widths, so check the format before you assume. A hutch buys storage upward without taking more floor, which is the trade that makes a small room work.
