L-Shaped Desk

An L-shaped desk puts a corner to work and gives you roughly half again the surface of a straight desk on the same wall. Ours run 43.3 to 68.9 inches along the front, in wood-look board with walnut, oak and natural finishes, several with a hutch or a charging station.

L-shaped desk dimensions and how to measure the corner

An L-shaped desk turns a corner into working surface instead of dead space, which is why it fits a spare room better than a straight desk of the same footprint. You get a main run and a return, and the return is where the things you use but do not look at go.

It needs two measurements rather than one, and the corner has to be genuinely square. These run 43.3 to 68.9 inches along the front and 28.4 to 59.8 deep, and that depth figure is the footprint of the L rather than the desktop, which is worth knowing before you compare it to a straight desk.

Corner desks with a hutch or a charging station

Check the wall for a radiator, a baseboard or a door that swings into the corner, because an L-shape commits to both walls at once and cannot be nudged along afterwards.

A hutch raises storage above the surface without taking more floor, and overall heights here reach 76.8 inches, so measure against the wall rather than assuming desk height. Where a desk carries a charging station the port types are named on the product page, and it needs a socket within reach of the corner you have chosen.

Setting up two monitors on an L-shaped desk

Two monitors is the reason most people buy the shape. Put the main screen on the long run directly ahead and the second on the return at an angle, so you turn your head rather than your chair. Keep the corner itself clear: it is the hardest part of the desk to reach and the easiest to lose to clutter.

Cable management routes leads through the frame rather than leaving them across the return, which matters more on an L than on a straight desk because the cable run is longer.

Frequently asked questions

What is standard desk height?
Standard desk height is 29 to 30 inches from the floor to the work surface, and L-shaped desks are built to that range unless Both spans of an L sit at the same height, so a single chair works at either. A chair adjusting through roughly 17 to 21 inches of seat height pairs correctly with it.
How to choose a home office desk for multiple monitors
For two monitors a desk at least 47 inches wide and 24 inches deep puts the screens roughly an arm's length away. For three monitors or an ultrawide, an L-shaped desk gives the width without pushing further into the room, and lets the second screen sit on the return rather than in your peripheral vision. Check the stated surface weight capacity, since a monitor arm clamps to the edge.
How to organize office desk
On an L-shaped desk, put the computer on the longer span and keep the return for paperwork and anything you use in bursts, so the main surface stays clear. Route cables along the inside of the corner rather than across either surface. Where the desk has a hutch, reference material goes at eye level and the surface underneath stays working space.
What is the difference between desk height and counter height?
Desk height is 29 to 30 inches and counter height is 36 inches, a gap of about 6 inches. The difference decides which seat fits: a desk chair adjusts through roughly 17 to 21 inches of seat height while a counter stool sits at 24 to 26 inches. A counter stool at an L-shaped desk puts the shoulders too high on both spans.
