Solid wood desks and how they wear

Solid wood is the difference between a desk that ages and one that wears out. A dent can be sanded and re-oiled, a scratch fades into the grain, and the surface can be refinished years later. A printed board surface cannot be repaired once it is through, only hidden.

It is also stiffer along its length, which shows on a wide unsupported top: a solid desk holds a straight line under a monitor and a stack of paper where a thinner board panel will bow over time.

Widths run 31.9 to 63 inches and depths 16.3 to 28. Under 44 inches suits a bedroom corner or a hallway; over 55 gives you room for two screens and paperwork at once. Under 20 inches deep a monitor sits too close for a full day, so take the deeper option if the desk is for real work.

Heights run 29.5 to 31.5, which is standard desk height and what office chairs are built to meet.

Caring for a solid wood desk

Walnut, natural and oak are the finishes here. Walnut is a deep even brown that suits a settled room; oak is lighter with an open grain that keeps a small space feeling open; natural sits between them.

Wipe along the grain with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away. Skip all-purpose sprays containing ammonia or silicone, which strip an oiled finish and haze a lacquered one. Blot spills as they happen, and keep the desk out of the direct path of a radiator or a sunny window, since wood moves with humidity and a steady spot keeps a top flat. A mark that will not lift usually comes out with a little soap flake solution on a cloth rather than anything stronger.

How to clean a wood desk
Wipe a solid wood desk with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away, working with the grain. Is walnut a good wood for a desk?
