Lateral and vertical file cabinets

A file cabinet is the piece that decides whether paperwork gets put away or stacked. These run from small rolling pedestals that live under a desk to full-height units that stand on their own, in steel and in wood-look board.

A lateral cabinet is wider than it is deep and files run left to right across the drawer, so you see every tab at once when you open it. A vertical cabinet is narrow and deep, files run front to back, and it takes far less wall. Lateral suits a room where you are in the files daily; vertical suits a corner where floor space is the constraint.

Locking file cabinets, and what a lock is worth

Most of these lock, and the lock is doing real work in a shared room, a home office a client walks through, or anywhere you keep contracts and records. Check whether the lock secures every drawer or only the top one, since a single-drawer lock on a four drawer unit is a different proposition.

Heights run 17.7 to 64.2 inches and widths 14.7 to 59.1. A two drawer pedestal at desk height doubles as a side surface. A four or five drawer unit holds a working archive but needs a wall it can be anchored to.

File cabinet sizes and letter or legal files

Letter and legal are different widths and a drawer built for one will not take the other, so check the format before you order. Where a cabinet takes both, the product page says so.

Rolling models move for cleaning or reconfiguring and the casters lock so the cabinet stays put in use. Anchor any tall unit to a stud before you fill it, because a loaded top drawer pulls the weight forward. Wipe steel with a damp cloth and a mild detergent, and keep the drawer runners clear of dust so they keep sliding cleanly.
