A two drawer file cabinet is the size that fits under a desk, which is what most home offices actually need. Ours run steel and wood, most lock, and a good number roll on casters so they can be moved out of the way.

Under the desk or beside it

Height is what decides this. Anything under about 27 inches clears a standard 29 to 30 inch desk and can live in the knee well or beside the pedestal. Taller cabinets in this range are meant to stand against a wall and work as a surface.

Rolling or fixed

A cabinet on casters can be pulled out when you need it and pushed back when you do not, which suits a shared room. Fixed cabinets sit more solidly and are the better choice if the top will hold a printer.

What locks and what does not

Most of these lock, usually on both drawers from a single barrel with two keys. Read the product page rather than the title: on some cabinets the only locking part is the casters, which is a brake and not security.

Frequently asked questions

Will a two drawer file cabinet fit under my desk?
Measure the clear height under your desk first. Most desks sit 29 to 30 inches high, and cabinets under about 27 inches will clear that with room to open the top drawer. The height is listed on every product page.
Are the wheels lockable?
On the rolling cabinets, usually two of the casters have brakes. That holds the cabinet still while a drawer is open. It is a brake rather than a security lock, which is a separate thing.
Can a two drawer cabinet take a printer on top?
The fixed ones generally can. Check the stated top weight capacity on the product page, and prefer a fixed cabinet over a rolling one for anything heavy that stays put.
Do they take legal size folders?
Most do, usually with an adjustable rail that switches between letter and legal. The supported sizes are listed on each product page.
