Shallow drawers are the point

A writing desk drawer is not filing. It is for the things that otherwise live on the surface: pens, chargers, a notebook, the post you have not opened. Shallow and wide beats deep and narrow for that, because you can see everything at once.

Runners decide how it ages

Metal glides run smoothly and keep running. Wooden runners are quieter and suit a solid wood desk, but they need the drawer to stay square. Full extension glides let you reach the back of the drawer, which on a deep desk is the difference between usable and forgotten.

Where the drawers sit

Drawers under the centre of a desk restrict your legs. Drawers to one side leave the knee well open. On a desk you will sit at for hours, that placement matters more than the number of drawers.

Frequently asked questions

How many drawers do I actually need on a writing desk?
One shallow drawer covers what most people take off the surface daily. More than two usually means you are filing, and a separate cabinet handles that better than a desk does.
Do the drawers lock?
On a writing desk, usually not. Locking drawers are more common on file cabinets and executive desks. Where a writing desk does lock it is stated on the product page.
Will a centre drawer get in the way of my legs?
It can, particularly if you are tall. A desk with drawers to one side leaves the knee well clear. The clearance under the desk is listed where the manufacturer states it.
Are full extension glides worth it?
On a deep drawer, yes. Without them the back few inches are hard to reach and end up unused, which is most of a deep drawer wasted.
