Drafting Table

A drafting table is a working surface built for drawing, cutting and model-making rather than typing, usually on a metal frame with a larger, sturdier top. Ours run 35.4 to 45.3 inches wide on steel frames, several with drawers or a shelf below, at heights that suit seated work or standing over a cutting mat.

Drafting tables and what they are for

A drafting table is a work table rather than a desk. The top is larger relative to the frame, the frame is usually steel, and the whole thing is built to take being leaned on, cut on and drawn across without shifting.

That makes it useful well beyond drafting. It suits sewing, model-making, painting, laying out large prints and any task where you need a big clear surface and do not want to worry about the finish.

Drafting table height and size

Widths run 35.4 to 45.3 inches and depths are a consistent 23.6, which is deep enough for a large sheet without becoming a table you cannot reach across. Heights run 27.5 to 35.8: the lower end suits seated work at a normal chair, the upper end suits standing or a tall stool.

Pick the height around how you actually work. Seated at a normal chair wants the low end; standing over a cutting mat wants the high. A height-adjustable model covers both if the table serves more than one purpose.

Drafting tables with drawers and storage

A metal frame is what keeps the top steady under pressure, and it is the reason these hold a line better than a light wooden desk when you lean on one edge. Check the footprint against the room as well as the top, because a splayed frame takes more floor than the surface suggests.

Several carry drawers or a shelf underneath for the tools and paper the work needs within reach. Keep the surface clear of standing liquid and wipe it with a damp cloth, and check the frame bolts occasionally, since a table that gets leaned on works its fixings loose over time. A cutting mat over the top takes the blade marks and is far cheaper to replace than the table underneath.

Frequently asked questions

What is a drafting table?
A drafting table is a work table with a top that tilts toward the user, so drawing and technical work happen at an angle rather than flat. The tilt puts the work perpendicular to your line of sight, which removes both the forward neck bend of working flat and the visual distortion that makes a drawing look right on the table and wrong once lifted.
What is a drafting table used for?
A drafting table is used for technical drawing, architectural drafting, illustration, model making and any detail work where the eye has to judge a line accurately. The tilting surface suits long sessions of close work. It also works as an ordinary desk when the top is set flat, which is why it suits a room that has to do both jobs.
How tall is a drafting table?
Most drafting tables at Two Seventy Nine adjust in height rather than standing at one level, and the stated heights across this range run from 26.8 to 37.8 inches. That covers seated drawing at the lower end and standing work at the upper end. A few models stand at a fixed height instead.
How big is a drafting table?
Drafting tables in this range run from 35.43 to 45.27 inches wide on a consistent 23.6 inch depth. The shallow depth is deliberate, because a tilted top brings its far edge toward you as it rises. A surface at the narrow end takes a sheet up to roughly A2, and the wider tops leave room for instruments beside the work.
