Reception Desk

A reception desk is the first piece anyone sees, built with a raised front so the working surface stays private. Ours run 46.5 to 86.6 inches wide in wood and wood-look finishes, all with cable management and several with LED lighting.

Reception desk height and the raised front

A reception desk works on two levels at once. The person behind it sits at normal desk height; the counter facing the room sits higher, so paperwork, a monitor and a keyboard stay out of sight from the other side while the top stays clear for a visitor to sign something.

Heights here run 39.3 to 43.9 inches, which is the counter rather than the work surface. That is roughly standing height for someone at the front, and it is the measurement that makes the piece do its job.

Reception desk sizes for the space

Widths run 46.5 to 86.6 inches and depths 19.7 to 23.6. A narrower desk suits a small entrance or a studio where the piece has to fit beside a door. A wider one gives room for two people or for a visitor to spread out a form.

Think about the approach as much as the footprint. Leave clear floor in front so nobody is standing in the doorway to talk, and check which side the person behind will enter from, since a desk that has to be climbed around is one nobody sits at properly.

Reception desk cable management and lighting

All of these carry cable management, which matters more here than on a normal desk: a reception desk is seen from the front all day, and a visible cable run undoes the point of the raised counter.

Several have integrated LED lighting along the front, which lifts an entrance that has no natural light. Locking storage is worth having where the desk holds anything a visitor should not reach. Wipe the counter with a barely damp cloth, since it is the surface most often touched, and deal with marks promptly rather than leaving them to set into a coated finish.

Frequently asked questions

How tall is a reception desk?
Reception desks at Two Seventy Nine stand between 39 and 43.9 inches high at the counter. That is above standard desk height of 29 to 30 inches and at or above kitchen counter height of 36 inches, which is what lets the counter screen the working surface behind it from a visitor standing at the desk.
What is a reception desk?
A reception desk is a front-of-house workstation with a raised counter front that screens the work surface from visitors. It combines a seated working position at normal desk height with a standing transaction surface facing the entrance. It is bought for a business entrance, clinic, salon or studio rather than for a home office.
What is standard desk height?
Standard desk height is 29 to 30 inches from the floor to the work surface. On a reception desk the seated work surface sits at that height while the counter front stands higher, between 39 and 43.9 inches in this range. That means a standard office chair is the right seat behind a reception desk rather than a stool.
How to organize office desk
A reception desk is organised around what a visitor should and should not see. Keep the transaction counter clear, and put the terminal, phone and paperwork on the lower working surface where the counter screens them. Where the desk carries cable management, route cables through it rather than over the counter edge, and where it locks, lock the storage when the desk is unattended.
