White in a room that is not only an office

A white cabinet reads as furniture rather than as filing, which matters in a bedroom or a living room. Against a pale wall it recedes, where a black cabinet at ankle height is the first thing you see on entering.

What to expect from the finish

Most of these are powder coated steel. The coating is baked on and harder than wet paint, which is what keeps a white cabinet looking white at the edges and around the lock where a cabinet gets handled.

Two drawers or four

Two drawers fit under a desk and keep the cabinet out of sight. Four stand against a wall and become part of the room, which is where the colour choice starts to matter. Pick the height first and the finish second.

A baked powder coat holds its colour well and wipes clean. The places to watch are the drawer pulls and the area around the lock, where handling shows first on any pale finish.

Is a white cabinet a bad idea in a busy office?

Not necessarily. Steel with a powder coat cleans easily. It is woven or soft finishes that struggle in heavy use, not coated metal.

Which is better under a desk, two drawers or four?

Two, in almost every case. Most desks sit 29 to 30 inches high, and a two drawer cabinet clears that. Four drawer cabinets are meant to stand against a wall.

Do white cabinets come with locks?
