The frame is the style

What makes a desk industrial is an exposed metal frame doing visible structural work, usually in black. The top sits on it rather than hiding it. That honesty about construction is the point, and it is why the look sits comfortably in a room with brick, concrete or older wood.

Wear is part of it

A weathered or distressed top is doing something practical as well as decorative. Marks that would stand out on a gloss finish disappear into a grain that already reads used, which suits a desk that gets worked at rather than looked at.

Metal frames and floors

A steel frame concentrates weight on four small feet. On a hard floor use the levelling feet or pads supplied, and check them again after the desk has been loaded, because a frame that racks slightly will show as a wobble.
