Coffee table size, height and spacing

A coffee table works best at about the height of the sofa seat or an inch or two lower, and at about two thirds the length of the sofa. Heights here run 10.3 to 27.2 inches and widths 20.1 to 55.1 inches, from low-slung designs to taller ones.

Leave about 18 inches between the table and the sofa so you can reach a drink and still walk past, and keep main walkways around 30 inches wide.

Round coffee table and other shapes

A round coffee table has no corners to bump into and keeps a path open in a tight room or in front of a sectional. Oval, square and rectangular tables are here too: oval and rectangular shapes suit a long sofa, while square tables suit a sectional or chairs facing inward.

Select models are nesting sets, where a smaller table slides under a larger one and pulls out when you need more surface.

Coffee table with storage and lift-top designs

A coffee table with storage keeps remotes, books and blankets close but out of sight. Some models here have storage, using drawers, open shelves, cabinet doors or a compartment under the top.

Select models are lift-top designs, where the top raises up and toward you to make a surface for a laptop or a meal at the sofa.

Marble coffee table, glass and sintered stone tops

A marble coffee table brings natural stone veining to the room, and some models here use a marble top. Sintered stone, a manufactured stone on other select models, stands up to heat and scratches better than marble, and glass tops keep a small room feeling open.

Use coasters on marble, which can etch from acidic drinks, and wipe glass and sintered stone with a soft cloth and mild cleaner.

Wood coffee table construction

A wood coffee table here is most often built from MDF or engineered wood panels in a walnut, oak, natural or black finish, and some models include solid wood parts such as acacia or oak.

Metal frames, rattan, vegan leather and fiberglass also appear on select models. Dust with a soft dry cloth, and use coasters to protect the finish from heat and moisture.

Frequently asked questions

How do you style a coffee table?
Style a coffee table by grouping a few items of different heights on a tray or in one zone: a stack of books, something living like a plant or flowers, and one decorative object such as a bowl or candle. Leave at least half the surface clear for drinks and feet, and repeat a color or material from the room.
How tall should a coffee table be?
A coffee table should be about the same height as your sofa seat or an inch or two lower, which for most sofas means around 17 inches. That keeps drinks easy to reach and lets you rest your feet. Lower tables suit deep, low sofas, and heights on this page run 10.3 to 27.2 inches.
How do you pick a coffee table?
Pick a coffee table by measuring first: aim for about two thirds of your sofa's length, a height close to the seat, and about 18 inches of space from the sofa. Then choose a shape for the layout, round for tight rooms and rectangular for long sofas, and decide whether you need storage, a lift-top or an easy-care surface.
What do you put on a coffee table?
Put a few useful and decorative items on a coffee table: a tray to corral remotes and coasters, a short stack of books, and a plant, flowers or a candle. Keep items low so they do not block the view across the room, and leave enough open surface for drinks, snacks or a board game.
How far from the couch should a coffee table be?
A coffee table should be about 18 inches from the couch, close enough to reach a drink without leaning far and far enough to walk between them. In a busy room, stretch that toward 24 inches. If the table has a lift-top or storage that opens toward the sofa, leave a little extra space so it can open fully.
How big should a coffee table be?
A coffee table should be about two thirds the length of your sofa, so an 81 inch sofa pairs with a table around 54 inches long. For a sectional, choose a round or square table that reaches comfortably from both sides. Widths on this page run 20.1 to 55.1 inches, from small tables for apartments to larger ones for long sofas.
How do you decorate a round coffee table?
Decorate a round coffee table by building one centered arrangement, since there is no long side to fill. Place a round tray or low bowl in the middle, add a small stack of books and one taller piece such as a vase, and keep the edges clear so everyone around the table has room for a drink.
What is a coffee table?
A coffee table is a low table placed in front of a sofa or seating group, used to hold drinks, books, remotes and decor within easy reach. Most sit close to sofa seat height and come in round, oval, square and rectangular shapes. Some add storage or a lift-top, and tops range from wood finishes to glass, marble and sintered stone.
What is a lift top coffee table?
A lift top coffee table has a top panel that raises up and toward you on hinged arms, turning it into a higher surface for a laptop, a meal or a board game at the sofa. It lowers back to coffee table height when you are done, and many models hide a storage compartment underneath the lifting top.
