What the swivel is actually for

A chair that turns saves the small movements that add up over a day: reaching the drawer unit, turning to a second screen, getting out without pushing back. On an L-shaped desk it stops being a convenience and becomes the thing that makes the second surface usable.

Casters and the floor underneath

Most of these roll as well as turn. On hard floors look for soft or hooded casters that will not mark. On carpet, harder casters roll better, and a chair mat helps either way.

Height adjustment and the gas lift

Almost all of these adjust for height on a gas cylinder. The rating on that cylinder is what carries the load over years, so on a heavier build it is worth reading the stated capacity rather than assuming.

Frequently asked questions

Do all swivel chairs also roll?
Most do, but not all. A few sit on a fixed five star base without casters, which suits a chair used at a vanity or in a corner where you do not want it moving. The product page says which.
How much weight does a swivel chair take?
Across this range the stated capacity runs from 220 to 500 pounds. If you are near the upper end, look for a chair with a stated SGS or class rated gas cylinder and a metal rather than nylon base.
Will the casters mark a wood floor?
Soft or hooded casters are designed not to. On an older or softer floor a chair mat removes the question entirely, and hard floor mats are a separate item in the accessories range.
Can the swivel be locked?
Not on these. What can usually be locked is the tilt, which holds the backrest at a set angle. Tilt lock and swivel are different mechanisms.
