Black Framed Mirrors

A black framed mirror is a mirror in a black-finished surround, the frame treatment that draws a hard outline around the glass and reads as a graphic shape on the wall. These run 20 to 40 inches wide and 27 to 76 inches tall, in round, arched and rectangular outlines.

Why a black frame?

Because it makes the mirror a shape rather than a hole. A frameless or pale-framed mirror reads as an absence in the wall, while a black surround draws an outline that the eye registers as an object. On a white or pale wall the contrast does the work of artwork, which is why a black framed mirror often replaces a picture rather than sitting beside one.

Matt or gloss?

Matt black absorbs light and keeps the frame reading as a clean line at any angle. Gloss black reflects, which puts highlights along the frame and makes it read closer to lacquer or metal. Matt is the safer choice in a room with strong directional light, where a gloss frame picks up bright spots that fight the reflection inside it.

What does black sit against?

Almost anything, which is the practical argument. Black works as a neutral, so it holds against white, wood, greenery and colour without competing. The one combination to watch is black on a dark wall, where the frame loses its outline entirely and the mirror goes back to reading as a hole. On a dark wall, choose a lighter frame or accept the mirror will disappear.

What sizes and shapes?

20 to 40 inches wide and 27 to 76 inches tall, in round, arched and rectangular. The taller pieces here are full length and show the whole body; the smaller round ones suit a hallway or above a vanity. Frame material varies across metal, aluminum and composite by model, so check the individual listing.

Hanging a black framed mirror

Find the studs and match the fixing to the weight. Centre the glass 57 to 60 inches from the floor for a standard wall mirror, lower for a full length one so it shows your feet. Round frames need two fixings rather than one, otherwise there is nothing to stop the frame rotating slowly out of true.

Keeping the finish clean

Black shows dust along the top edge of the frame more than any other finish. Dust it with a dry cloth rather than a damp one, and keep glass cleaner off the frame itself: ammonia dulls a matt black over time and leaves a patchy sheen. Spray the cloth rather than the mirror so nothing runs down into the frame joint.

Where it works

Above a console in an entry, where the outline gives the wall a focal point. In a bathroom, where black reads sharp against tile. Opposite a window, where the contrast between dark frame and bright reflection is strongest. On a gallery wall it anchors the arrangement, since it is heavier visually than any frame around it.

Frequently asked questions

How do you hang a mirror on the wall?
Find the studs first, then match the fixing to the weight. Under about 20 pounds a single drywall anchor holds. Above that use a stud or two heavy-duty toggle bolts, and support the mirror at two points rather than one so it cannot swing out of level over time.
How do you mount a mirror on the wall?
Mounting fixes the mirror flush rather than suspending it. Use the brackets supplied, fixing top and bottom into studs or toggle bolts, and check level after the first bracket rather than at the end. Flush mounting suits heavy pieces and anywhere a swinging mirror would be knocked.
How do you hang a heavy mirror?
Use a French cleat across two studs. The cleat is two interlocking angled rails, one on the wall and one on the mirror, and it carries far more than a hook because the weight presses into the wall rather than pulling straight down on one fixing point.
How do you attach a mirror to a wall without nails?
Adhesive strips rated to at least double the mirror weight hold a small framed mirror on clean painted drywall. They are unsuitable for textured wallpaper, for anything above head height, or for glass over about 20 pounds, and they lose grip in humid rooms.
How do you remove a mirror glued to the wall?
Tape the face in a grid with masking tape so the glass holds together if it cracks, then work a thin pry bar or wire behind the mirror from a top corner, cutting the adhesive with a sawing motion. Wear gloves and eye protection, and expect to take some wall surface with it.
