What is a California king bed?
A California king bed takes a mattress measuring 72 by 84 inches. It is the longest standard size sold in the United States, four inches longer than a standard king and four inches narrower. That trade is the whole point of the size: it suits sleepers over about six feet tall, who run out of mattress before they run out of width.
California king against standard king
A standard king is 76 by 80 inches, so it is wider but shorter. Choose California king for height, standard king for shared width. If two people sleep across the bed and neither is especially tall, a standard king gives each person two more inches of shoulder room. If either sleeper is tall, the four extra inches of length matter more than the width does.
How much floor space does one need?
Allow for the frame, not the mattress. These frames run 83 to 92 inches long and 72 to 78 inches wide, so the largest needs a footprint close to eight feet by six and a half. Leave at least two feet of walking room on both sides and at the foot, which puts the practical minimum room size at roughly twelve by twelve feet for comfortable access.
Do king sheets fit a California king?
No. King fitted sheets are cut for a 76 by 80 inch mattress and a California king is 72 by 84, so a king sheet is too wide and four inches too short. It will not stay on the corners. Buy sheets labelled California king or Cal king specifically. Flat sheets and duvet covers are more forgiving, but fitted sheets are not.

Check the slat spacing: gaps wider than about three inches let a foam mattress sag between them over time. A box spring is only needed on a traditional rail frame that has no slat deck.
How do you choose one?
Work in this order: confirm the room takes the footprint, confirm you actually need the length over a standard king, then choose the headboard height for the wall behind it. Headboards here run 34 to 47 inches high, and a tall headboard behind a low window or a sloped ceiling will fight the room. Storage models are worth it only if the bed sits away from a wall on at least one side.
