End Tables

An end table, also called a side table, is a small table set beside a sofa or chair to keep a lamp, drink or book within reach. This page carries end tables from 15 to 28.4 inches tall, most of them round, some with storage or sold as nesting sets, with wood, marble, sintered stone and glass tops.

End table height beside the sofa

An end table should sit close to the height of the sofa or chair arm, within about 2 inches either way, so a lamp or drink is easy to reach. Heights here run 15 to 28.4 inches, from low tables for a deep sofa to taller tables for high-armed chairs.

Depths run 9.8 to 27.6 inches. A table no deeper than the sofa keeps it from sticking out past the front of the seat.

Small end tables for tight spaces

Small end tables fit where a full table would block a walkway, such as between a sofa and a wall or beside a reading chair. Widths here start at 9.8 inches, and narrow rectangular designs slip into gaps where a round table would not fit.

Select models are nesting tables sold as a set of 2, where the smaller table tucks beneath the larger one until you need an extra surface.

Round side table and other shapes

Most end tables here are a round side table, a shape with no corners to catch knees that suits the curve of an armchair or the corner of a sectional.

Square and rectangular tables line up neatly against a sofa arm and give more room for a lamp and a book, and a select model is oval.

End table with storage

An end table with storage keeps remotes, chargers, coasters and reading material next to your seat. Some models here have storage, using open shelves, cabinet doors or a drawer.

End Tables with Storage, a narrower page under this one, gathers those designs in one place.

Wood end table, marble and glass tops

Some wood end table designs here are solid wood, including oak and pine, while others use MDF panels in a walnut, natural or black finish, some with solid wood parts.

Tops also come in marble, sintered stone and glass, and select models use rattan, metal frames or fiberglass. Use coasters on wood and marble, and wipe glass and stone with a soft cloth and a mild cleaner.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best end table?
The best end table is one that matches your seating: about the height of the sofa or chair arm, with a top large enough for a lamp and a drink. Choose storage if you need a spot for remotes and chargers, a round shape for tight walkways, and an easy-care top such as sealed wood, glass or sintered stone for daily use.
How tall should an end table be?
An end table should be about the same height as the arm of the sofa or chair beside it, or within about 2 inches of it, which for most sofas means about two feet tall. That keeps a lamp and drink within easy reach. Heights on this page run 15 to 28.4 inches, so measure your arm height first.
What is an end table?
An end table is a small table placed at the end of a sofa or beside a chair to hold a lamp, a drink, a book or a remote. It is also called a side table or accent table. End tables come in round, square and rectangular shapes, and some add shelves, cabinet doors or a drawer for storage.
How do you clean an end table?
Clean an end table by dusting it with a soft dry cloth, then wiping with a cloth lightly dampened with water and a drop of mild soap, and drying it right away. Avoid soaking wood or wood finishes. Use glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth for glass tops, and never use acidic or abrasive cleaners on marble.
How do you decorate end tables?
Decorate end tables with a lamp for light, then add one or two smaller items such as a plant, a framed photo or a short stack of books. Keep enough open space for a drink and a phone. When a sofa has an end table on each side, a matching lamp on both helps the arrangement look balanced.
Do end tables have to match?
No, end tables do not have to match. Two different tables can look planned if they share something: a similar height, a common color or finish, or the same material, such as wood tones or metal. Keep both tables close to the height of the sofa arm, and let matching lamps tie them together if the tables differ in shape.
How tall should a lamp be on an end table?
A lamp on an end table should bring the bottom of the shade close to eye level when you are seated, which usually means a lamp a little over two feet tall on a table near sofa arm height. Together, the table and lamp often reach about 60 inches from the floor, so the light falls on your book rather than into your eyes.
Are end tables and nightstands the same height?
Not always. An end table is sized to the arm of a sofa or chair, while a nightstand is sized to the top of the mattress, usually level with it or a few inches above. The two often land at similar heights, so an end table can work beside a bed if its top sits close to the mattress height.
