Do you need a headboard

A headboard stops pillows sliding off the back of the bed and protects the wall from wear, which is the practical case. The visual case is bigger: the headboard is the tallest surface in most bedrooms and sets the tone before anything else in the room does. Every bed here comes with one, so it is not a separate purchase or a separate fitting job.

Sizes and clearance

Measure the wall before the bed. A queen headboard is roughly 62 to 66 inches wide and a king 78 to 82, and both need clearance either side for nightstands. Headboard heights here run from about 40 to 58 inches from the floor, which matters if the bed sits under a window.

Storage and trundles

Several frames use the space under the mattress rather than wasting it, either as drawers in the base or as a trundle that pulls out to take a second mattress. A trundle needs clear floor on the side it opens, so check that before choosing which wall the bed goes against.

Materials and finishes

Headboards here are either upholstered or wood. Upholstered models use boucle or a woven fabric over foam, which is softer to lean against for reading in bed and warmer to the touch in a cold room. Wood and rattan headboards are firmer, take a wipe rather than a vacuum, and show grain rather than texture. Finishes run to black, gray, oat, cream and walnut.
