Oversized sectional sizes and room fit

An oversized sectional needs a room that holds its full length plus walkways, and widths here run 130 to 170 inches. Layouts include U-shaped, L-shaped and straight modular designs.

Tape the outline on the floor before buying, keep about 30 inches clear for walkways, and leave around 18 inches between the seat and a coffee table.

Oversized modular sectional layouts

Most models here are an oversized modular sectional, built from separate sections that can be rearranged as the room changes, often into a U, an L or two smaller groupings.

Sections also travel through doors and up stairs one at a time. Select models need no assembly, and some include an ottoman or a chaise.

Oversized reclining sectional features

Some models here are an oversized reclining sectional, with power recline on select models. Some add USB charging, cup holders, a center console, storage, LED lights or speakers.

Some reclining models use a wall hugger design that needs less space behind the seat. Measure with every footrest open, and keep an outlet within reach of power models.

Oversized leather sectional and corduroy choices

An oversized leather sectional here comes in genuine leather, vegan leather or bonded leather on select models. Bonded leather layers a coated surface over a backing made with leather fibers and tends to wear faster than genuine or vegan leather.

Most other models are corduroy, a ribbed fabric that feels soft and suits a busy family room, with chenille and velvet on some. Gray, black, green and brown are the most common colors.

Large sectional construction and care

A large sectional takes heavy daily use, so check each listing's construction line. Some models list solid wood, sometimes with plywood or MDF panels, and some add a metal or iron frame.

Keep sections joined with their brackets or connectors so gaps do not open, rotate cushions to spread wear, and vacuum fabric with an upholstery attachment.

Frequently asked questions

How do you take apart a sectional couch?
Remove the cushions, then find the connectors where the sections meet, usually metal brackets or clips under the frame or along the sides. Lift one section straight up to release hook-style brackets, or unscrew bolt-on hardware, and unplug any power sections first. Keep the hardware in a labeled bag and take photos so the sectional goes back together the same way.
How do you measure a sectional couch?
Measure each side from the outside of the arm or end to the far corner, which gives the length of each run. Then measure depth from the front of the seat to the back, and height from the floor to the top of the back. For a room check, tape the full outline on the floor and confirm walkways stay about 30 inches wide.
How do you keep a sectional couch together?
Use the connectors that came with the sectional and check that each bracket is fully seated. If sections still drift, add sectional connector clips, set the sectional on a rug with a nonslip pad, or put rubber furniture grippers under the legs. Tighten any bolts every few months, since daily use slowly loosens them.
Do sectional couches come apart?
Yes, most sectional couches separate into their individual pieces, which helps with delivery and moving. Modular sectionals go further, since each section can be rearranged or used on its own. Most oversized sectionals here are modular, so you can split them into smaller groupings or carry them through doors one piece at a time.
How long is a sectional couch?
Standard sectionals often measure around 8 to 10 feet along their longest side, while oversized sectionals go further. On this page widths run 130 to 170 inches, roughly 11 to 14 feet. Measure every side before you buy, since an L-shaped or U-shaped sectional has a length for each run and each one has to fit its wall.
What size rug do you need for a large sectional?
For a large sectional, choose a rug big enough for at least the front legs of every section to rest on it, which often means 9 by 12 feet or larger. Leave roughly a foot of bare floor between the rug and the walls, and center the rug on the seating area rather than on the room.
