Power Recliners

A power recliner is a reclining chair driven by an electric motor, so a button or remote moves the back and footrest to the position you want instead of a lever. This page carries power recliners 29.1 to 38.2 inches wide in velvet, vegan leather, linen, chenille and genuine leather, including lift, swivel rocker and wall hugger models.

Power recliner chair size and fit

A power recliner chair should let you sit back with your feet flat on the floor and your head on the headrest. Widths here run 29.1 to 38.2 inches and depths 26.8 to 38.6 inches, and listed seat heights sit near 19 inches.

Plan space for the footrest fully extended in front and, on a standard recliner, about a foot behind for the back to tilt. Select wall hugger models move the seat forward as they recline, so they can sit closer to the wall.

Power lift recliners and other motion

Power lift recliners add a motorized base that tilts the chair forward to help you stand, and many models here include one. Some models swivel and rock instead, some glide, and select swivel rocker designs suit a nursery or reading corner.

Power reclining chair outlets and cords

A power reclining chair plugs into a wall outlet through a cord and transformer, so place it within reach of one. Run the cord behind the chair or along the baseboard, and keep it out of the mechanism's path.

If the chair sits in the middle of a room, a flat cord cover or a rug over the cord keeps the walkway safe. Keep pets, children and objects clear of the footrest before closing it.

Massage recliner and comfort features

Some models here are a massage recliner with heat, usually controlled from a remote so you can change settings without getting up. Some models add USB charging so a phone charges beside you, and select models include cup holders or LED lights.

Power recliners upholstery and construction

Power recliners here come in upholstery options including velvet, vegan leather, linen and chenille, plus a top grain leather model. Brown and gray are the most common colors, with beige, white, blue, black, pink and green also available.

Some models list solid wood parts in their construction, some use plywood or engineered wood panels, and some are built on an iron, steel or metal frame. Vacuum fabric with an upholstery attachment and wipe vegan leather with a soft damp cloth.

Frequently asked questions

What is a power recliner?
A power recliner is a recliner that uses an electric motor instead of a lever or body weight to move the back and footrest. You press a button or use a remote, and the chair stops at whatever position you choose. Some power recliners also add a lift base, swivel, rocking, massage, heat or USB charging.
Are power recliners worth the extra cost?
Power recliners are worth the extra cost for many people, because they recline smoothly to any position without pushing or pulling a handle, which helps anyone with limited strength or mobility. They also make features such as lift bases, massage and USB charging possible. The tradeoffs are a need for an outlet and a motor that may eventually need service.
Do power recliners have to be plugged in?
Yes. Most power recliners have to be plugged into an outlet to recline or return upright, since the motor does the work. Some power recliners can run from a compatible rechargeable battery pack that lets the chair sit away from an outlet, but not every chair supports one, so check the listing before planning a cordless setup.
How do you hide cords for a power recliner?
Hide cords for a power recliner by placing the chair near an outlet and running the cord behind it along the baseboard. Cord clips or a paintable cord cover keep it tidy along the wall. If the chair sits in the middle of the room, use a flat floor cord cover or run the cord under a rug, leaving slack so it does not pull.
How long do power recliners last?
A well-made power recliner often lasts many years with normal use. The frame and upholstery usually outlast the electrical parts, and the motor, hand control or transformer are the parts most likely to need replacing. Keeping the cord clear of the mechanism, not sitting on an open footrest and avoiding overloading the chair all help it last longer.
What is a dual power recliner?
A dual power recliner has two motors, one for the backrest and one for the footrest, so you can raise your legs without tilting back or recline the back while your feet stay down. A single motor recliner moves both together. Dual motor designs give more position control, which many people find helpful for reading, watching TV or napping.
Can a power recliner be used manually?
Usually not. Most power recliners have no manual lever, and the motor holds the back and footrest in place, so you cannot push it into a new position by hand. If the power goes out, the chair stays where it is until power returns or a compatible battery pack is connected. Choose a manual recliner if outlets are a problem.
