Sectional couch sizes and room fit

A sectional couch should fit the room with walkways left open on every side. Widths here run 54.3 to 170 inches and depths 30.7 to 124 inches, so measure both walls a sectional will sit along, not just one.

Mark the footprint on the floor with painter's tape, leave about 18 inches to the coffee table and around 30 inches for walkways, and check that each section fits through doorways and up stairs.

Modular sectional couch layouts

A modular sectional couch is made of separate pieces that you can rearrange, add to or split up. Most sectionals here are modular, in L-shaped, U-shaped and curved layouts, and select models need no assembly.

Sections usually join with brackets or clips under the frame, so on many modular designs an L layout can be split up or reshaped when you move rooms.

L-shaped sectional couch and chaise options

An L-shaped sectional couch fits into a corner and uses two walls, while a U-shaped design wraps around a coffee table for bigger groups. Some models add a chaise for stretching out, and some include a matching ottoman or storage.

Before ordering a fixed layout, check which side the chaise or long end sits on, usually described as left-facing or right-facing as you face the couch.

Sectional couch with recliner seats

A sectional couch with recliner seats lets one or more people put their feet up, with power recline on some models and manual recline on others. Select models add USB charging, cup holders, a center console, LED lights or speakers.

Reclining seats need open floor in front, and standard designs need space behind to tilt; wall hugger models can sit closer to the wall.

Leather sectional couch and fabric choices

A leather sectional couch here comes in genuine leather, vegan leather or bonded leather, and fabric models include chenille, corduroy, velvet, boucle, linen and sherpa. Gray, black, green and brown are the most common colors.

Construction varies by model: some list a solid wood frame, often with plywood or MDF panels, and some use a metal frame. Vacuum fabric regularly and dust leather with a soft dry cloth.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sectional couch?
A sectional couch is a couch made of two or more sections that join into one seating piece, most often in an L shape or a U shape. Sections can include corner seats, armless seats, a chaise or an ottoman. Modular sectionals let you rearrange or add pieces, while fixed sectionals keep a single layout.
How do you take apart a couch sectional?
Remove the cushions, then lift one section slightly to see the connectors underneath or along the sides where the pieces meet. Unhook, unclip or unscrew the brackets and slide the sections apart, with a helper supporting the weight. Unplug any power sections first, and keep the hardware together so the sectional goes back the same way.
How do you measure a sectional couch?
Measure a sectional couch along each outside edge, from the back corner to the end of each arm, then measure the depth and height of each section. At home, measure both walls, mark the footprint with painter's tape, and check doorways and hallways against the largest single section rather than the whole sectional.
How do you connect a sectional couch?
Line the sections up in their final layout, then push them together so the connectors on the frames meet. Many sectionals use metal brackets that hook or slide into each other, or clips that lock underneath. Lift one side slightly to engage the bracket, check that the seat fronts are even, and tighten any screws the instructions call for.
What makes a couch a sectional?
A couch is a sectional when it is built from separate sections that join together rather than one fixed frame. The sections can form an L, a U or a curve, or line up straight, and they often include a corner piece or a chaise. Because the pieces separate, a sectional is also easier to move through doorways than a single large couch.
Is a couch or a sectional better?
A sectional is better when you need more seats, want to fill a corner or like to stretch out, since it seats more people in one piece. A standard couch is better for small rooms, changing layouts and frequent moves, and it pairs easily with chairs. Measure the room first, then choose by how many people sit there every day.
How big is a sectional couch?
Sectional couches vary widely by layout. On this page, widths run 54.3 to 170 inches and depths 30.7 to 124 inches, from compact designs for small rooms to large U-shaped layouts. An L-shaped sectional usually seats four to six people, larger U-shaped designs seat more, and the biggest models here seat up to 10 people.
