Bookcases

A bookcase has to hold weight without complaint, and that is what separates one from a display unit of the same shape. Ours run from low cases that sit under a window to tall ones that take a wall floor to ceiling, in wood-look board, solid wood and glass-fronted designs.

Bookcases for books, not just for display

A bookcase is what you buy when things need somewhere to live and stay there. Books are heavy, and a three foot run of hardbacks passes forty pounds easily, so the shelves have to be built for it. You will find fixed and adjustable shelves here, open backs and closed, doors and none.

Heights run 15.7 to 91.1 inches and widths 11.6 to 91.8. Under 40 inches a case sits below the window line and reads as furniture; over 70 it draws the eye up and makes a tall room feel deliberate. Adjustable shelves let one case take paperbacks, folios and box files without wasting the gap above every row.

Bookshelf depth, and what will actually fit

Depth decides where a case can go, and it is the measurement people forget. These run 9.3 to 22.4 inches. Around ten to twelve is standard and takes a hardback with room to spare. Slimmer cases slip into a hallway or behind a door where a standard one would block the way past. Deeper cases suit box files and folded blankets as much as books.

Doors keep the dust off and the visual noise down, and glass fronts let you see the spines while doing it. Several have integrated LED lighting, which turns a dark alcove into something you can actually read the shelves in.

Anchoring a bookshelf to the wall

Fix any tall case to the wall before you load it. Anchor into a stud rather than drywall alone, because a drywall fixing pulls through under exactly the weight that matters. Fit the strap taut, not slack. It matters most on tall narrow cases and in any room a child uses, since a loaded top shelf pulls the weight forward. Many of these include anti-tip hardware.

Care is dusting more than cleaning. Take the books off a shelf at a time, and wipe with a barely damp cloth on wood or mild soap on a coated finish.

Frequently asked questions

How to anchor bookshelf to wall
A bookcase anchors by fixing a bracket or strap from the top rail of the case into a wall stud. Fixing into drywall alone will not hold a loaded case. Many bookcases at Two Seventy Nine include anti-tip hardware in the box, and Anchor before loading the shelves, and anchor tall narrow cases first, since those tip most easily.
How to secure bookshelf to wall
Secure a bookcase with the anti-tip bracket or strap supplied with it, driven into a wall stud rather than into plasterboard. Locate the stud, fix the wall side of the bracket first, then attach the case side to the top rail. A case with drawers should be secured before use, because an open loaded drawer moves the centre of gravity forward and outside the footprint.
How to organize a bookshelf
Put the heaviest books on the lowest shelves, which keeps the centre of gravity low and stays within the capacity of the shelf. Group by how you use the books rather than by colour if you actually read them. Leave one shelf partly empty for the things that accumulate. On a bookcase with adjustable shelves, set the spacing to the tallest book in each group before loading rather than after.
How to style a bookshelf like a designer
Alternate horizontal stacks with vertical runs so the eye has somewhere to rest, and leave roughly a third of each shelf empty. Keep a consistent depth by pulling everything forward to the shelf edge. Objects work in odd numbers. On a bookcase with integrated LED lighting, a lit upper shelf becomes the focal point, so put the things worth looking at there rather than the reference books.
How to build a bookshelf wall
A bookshelf wall is built by running several cases of the same height side by side and anchoring each one separately to a stud. Matching height matters more than matching width, since an unbroken top line is what makes separate cases read as one piece. Leave no gap between cases. Check the combined depth against the room: cases at 12 inches deep or less keep a narrow room usable.
What is the standard depth of a bookshelf?
Most bookcases are 10 to 13 inches deep, which takes a standard hardback with a little room to spare. Bookcases at Two Seventy Nine include slim-depth models under 12 inches for hallways and tight walls, and deeper cases for large-format books and objects. Depth is stated on every listing, and it is the measurement worth checking first in a narrow room.
How tall is a tall bookcase?
A tall bookcase generally means one standing 60 inches or more, and bookcases at Two Seventy Nine reach 91.1 inches at the tallest. Height is what buys capacity without floor space, which is why most bookcases in this range are tall. Anything above about 70 inches needs anchoring to a wall stud and puts its top shelf out of easy reach, so plan what goes up there.
