What makes a bed farmhouse?

Plainness and mass. A farmhouse bed has a broad headboard built from panels or vertical boards, chunky proportions, and joinery you can see rather than hidden fixings. There is no carving, no inlay and no curve for its own sake. The style descends from furniture made by rural joiners for use rather than display, and the look is what usefulness produced.

Farmhouse or rustic?

They are not the same, though shoppers search them interchangeably. Rustic keeps the wood rough: visible saw marks, live edges, knots and bark left on. Farmhouse is finished and smooth, painted or evenly stained, with the plainness in the shape rather than the surface. If you want texture and irregularity, that is rustic. If you want simple clean forms, that is farmhouse.

Modern farmhouse

Modern farmhouse strips the style further: the same broad panelled headboard, but in a flat matte paint or a pale neutral rather than a mid-brown stain, with squared-off edges and no beading. It is the version most of this collection follows. It sits comfortably in a new-build room where a heavily distressed piece would look out of place.

What sizes are here?

Full, queen, king and California king, with king by far the most common. Frames run 76 to 110 inches long and 55 to 84 inches wide, the longest figures coming from four poster and canopy models whose posts sit well outside the mattress. Check room length as well as width on anything with posts.

Storage and charging

Several frames here build storage into the base, as drawers or a cabinet at the foot, which suits the style because a farmhouse bed is already a substantial object and the storage does not make it look bulkier. A few include a charging station in the headboard. On any side-drawer model, check you have the full drawer depth of clear floor beside the bed.

What are they made from?

Engineered wood, plywood, wood, metal and upholstered panels, with rattan on a couple of models. Finishes run to walnut and oak. Worth being straight about: farmhouse styling reads as solid wood, but most pieces in this category across the market are engineered panels finished to look the part, and these are too. Construction: engineered wood and MDF.

What goes with it?

Plain, washed textiles rather than crisp ones: linen, cotton, waffle weave. The style is built on the idea of things made to be used, so bedding with a slightly relaxed look suits it better than anything sharply pressed. Keep the palette narrow, and let the headboard be the largest plain surface in the room.
