Fluted Nightstands

What is fluting?

Fluting is a run of parallel concave grooves cut into a surface, borrowed from classical column design. On furniture it turns a plain drawer front into a series of narrow light and shadow bands, which gives depth without adding color or pattern. The effect changes through the day as the light in the room moves across it.

Fluted or reeded?

They are opposites and the words get swapped constantly. Fluting is concave: the grooves are cut into the surface. Reeding is convex: half-round beads stand proud of it. Reeded fronts feel ribbed to the hand and catch more light on the high points; fluted fronts feel grooved and hold shadow in the recesses. Both are sold under the word fluted in practice.

How tall should a nightstand be?

Level with the top of your mattress, within about two inches either way. These stand 22 to 27 inches high, a fairly tight range that suits most standard beds. Measure from the floor to the top of the made bed rather than to the bed frame, because the mattress and bedding together add more height than people expect.

What size fits your bedside?

These are 18 to 28 inches wide and 14 to 18 inches deep. Leave a couple of inches between the nightstand and the bed frame so bedding does not catch on the corner. Several models here are sold as a matched pair, which is the simplest way to guarantee both sides of the bed sit at the same height.

Does fluting collect dust?

A little, in the grooves, though far less than a tufted or woven surface does. A dry paintbrush or a vacuum brush attachment run vertically along the flutes clears them in seconds. Wipe with a barely damp cloth along the direction of the grooves rather than across them, since a cloth dragged sideways catches and leaves fibres behind.

Drawers and charging

Drawer counts run one to three. An unusually high proportion of this collection includes a built in charging station, which suits a fluted front particularly well: a trailing cable across a grooved surface is more visually disruptive than across a flat one, so removing it matters more here. Two drawers is the useful default, one for nightly items and one for storage.

What are they made from?

Engineered wood, solid wood, particleboard and metal, in walnut and natural finishes with some brass hardware. Fluting is usually machined into an engineered panel rather than carved from solid wood, because a consistent groove profile is easier to achieve on a uniform material. Check the flute ends where they meet the drawer edge. Construction: engineered wood and MDF on most models.
