White Nightstands

A white nightstand is a bedside table finished in white, chosen where the bedside should stay light and visible rather than recede. These stand 20 to 28 inches high and 18 to 37 inches wide, in solid wood, engineered wood and metal, most of them with drawers.

How tall should a nightstand be?

Match the top of the nightstand to the top of your mattress, within about two inches either way. These stand 20 to 28 inches high, which spans a low platform bed through to a thick mattress on a taller frame. Measure from the floor to the top of the made bed, not to the frame, because the mattress and bedding together add more height than expected.

Why choose white beside the bed?

White stays visible in low light, which is the practical argument for it at a bedside. A dark nightstand disappears against a dark wall at night and gives you nothing to aim for when reaching for a glass or a phone. White also reflects lamplight back into the room, so a small bedroom with one bedside lamp reads brighter than it would with a wood or black piece.

Does white work with a white bed?

Yes, if the whites are not fighting. Two different whites side by side look like a mistake, one warm and one cool, in a way that two woods never do. Either match the finish closely or put clear distance between them with a wood-topped nightstand or a metal frame. Where the bed is white, a white nightstand with a visible grain or a contrasting handle keeps the two pieces distinct.

What size fits your bedside?

These run 18 to 37 inches wide and 15 to 17 inches deep. The narrow end suits a tight gap between the bed and a wall; the wide end is really a small bedside chest and needs a proper stretch of floor. Depth is consistent across the collection, so an open drawer projects a little over a foot into the room whichever you choose.

Drawers and charging

Drawer counts run one to four, and nearly everything here has at least one. Two drawers is the useful default: one for the things you reach for in the dark, one for storage. Several models include a built in charging station, which matters more at a bedside than anywhere else because it removes the cable that otherwise trails across the top and spoils a white surface.

What are they made from?

Solid wood, engineered wood, particleboard, metal and one rattan model. White is a painted or laminated finish rather than the natural color of any of these, so finish quality is what separates them: a thin white coat chips at the drawer edge and shows the substrate underneath as a dark line. Metal framed models avoid that. Construction: engineered wood and MDF on select models.

Keeping white white

Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately, since standing water is what lifts a painted or laminated edge. Skip bleach and abrasive creams, which dull gloss white and yellow matte white over time. For scuff marks, a melamine sponge used lightly lifts most of them without cutting through the finish to the color beneath.

Frequently asked questions

How tall should a nightstand be?
Match the top of the nightstand to the top of your mattress, within about two inches either way. The nightstands here stand 20 to 28 inches high, which covers a low platform bed through to a thick mattress on a taller frame. Measure from the floor to the top of the made bed rather than to the frame.
What color nightstand goes with a white bed?
White works if the two whites match closely, since a warm white beside a cool white reads as an error rather than a choice. Natural wood is the safer answer and gives the bed something to contrast against. If you want white on white, pick a nightstand with visible grain or a contrasting handle.
How do you paint a nightstand white?
Clean it, sand lightly, then prime before any white goes on. Primer matters more for white than any other color, because bare oak and walnut bleed tannin through a light topcoat and turn it brown within days. Use a stain blocking primer on wood and a bonding primer on laminate, and remove the drawers first.
What is a nightstand?
A nightstand is a small table or cabinet beside the bed, holding a lamp, a phone and whatever you want in reach overnight. It is normally built close to mattress height and usually carries drawers or a shelf. Nightstand, night stand and bedside table all describe the same piece of furniture.
What size lamp for a nightstand?
For nightstands of this height, a lamp around 24 to 27 inches tall puts the shade bottom near eye level when you are sitting up in bed, which is where it needs to be to read without glare. Keep the lamp under about one and a half times the nightstand height, and the base under a third of the top width.
How do you style a nightstand?
Work in threes and leave space. A lamp, one small stack or dish, and something living such as a plant is enough for most bedsides. On a white top especially, restraint reads as deliberate, because the pale surface shows every object clearly and a crowded nightstand looks busier than the same objects on wood would.
