How tall should a nightstand be?
Match the top of the nightstand to the top of your mattress, within about two inches either way. These stand 20 to 28 inches high, which spans a low platform bed through to a thick mattress on a taller frame. Measure from the floor to the top of the made bed, not to the frame, because the mattress and bedding together add more height than expected.
Why choose white beside the bed?
White stays visible in low light, which is the practical argument for it at a bedside. A dark nightstand disappears against a dark wall at night and gives you nothing to aim for when reaching for a glass or a phone. White also reflects lamplight back into the room, so a small bedroom with one bedside lamp reads brighter than it would with a wood or black piece.
Does white work with a white bed?
Yes, if the whites are not fighting. Two different whites side by side look like a mistake, one warm and one cool, in a way that two woods never do. Either match the finish closely or put clear distance between them with a wood-topped nightstand or a metal frame. Where the bed is white, a white nightstand with a visible grain or a contrasting handle keeps the two pieces distinct.
What size fits your bedside?
These run 18 to 37 inches wide and 15 to 17 inches deep. The narrow end suits a tight gap between the bed and a wall; the wide end is really a small bedside chest and needs a proper stretch of floor. Depth is consistent across the collection, so an open drawer projects a little over a foot into the room whichever you choose.
Drawers and charging
Drawer counts run one to four, and nearly everything here has at least one. Two drawers is the useful default: one for the things you reach for in the dark, one for storage. Several models include a built in charging station, which matters more at a bedside than anywhere else because it removes the cable that otherwise trails across the top and spoils a white surface.
What are they made from?
Solid wood, engineered wood, particleboard, metal and one rattan model. White is a painted or laminated finish rather than the natural color of any of these, so finish quality is what separates them: a thin white coat chips at the drawer edge and shows the substrate underneath as a dark line. Metal framed models avoid that. Construction: engineered wood and MDF on select models.
Keeping white white
Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately, since standing water is what lifts a painted or laminated edge. Skip bleach and abrasive creams, which dull gloss white and yellow matte white over time. For scuff marks, a melamine sponge used lightly lifts most of them without cutting through the finish to the color beneath.
