White storage cabinets with doors in a small room

A dark cabinet at full height reads as a wall. The same piece in white steps back and lets the room breathe, which is why white is the default for storage in a small office, a hallway or a bedroom corner where the storage is necessary and the bulk is not welcome.

It also takes light rather than absorbing it, so a white cabinet in a room with one window makes a real difference to how the space feels at the end of the day.

White office storage cabinet sizes and shelves

Heights run 25.6 to 72.4 inches and widths 14.6 to 63.2. A low unit sits under a window or doubles as a surface; a tall one takes the wall. Depths run 9.8 to 15.8, which is shallow enough to keep a hallway passable.

Adjustable shelves are what make a cabinet usable rather than merely large. Set the spacing for the tallest thing you are storing and work down, since a fixed shelf every twelve inches wastes the space above every short item. Move a shelf by lifting it clear of its supports rather than sliding it, which is what bends a shelf lip.

Anchoring an office storage cabinet

Anchor anything tall to the wall before you load it, into a stud rather than drywall alone, since a drywall fixing pulls through under exactly the load that matters. Most of these include an anti-tip kit.

White shows marks that a dark finish hides, which is the one real cost of choosing it. A barely damp cloth handles most of it, and a mild detergent handles the rest. Deal with scuffs promptly rather than leaving them, since they set into a coated finish over time. Avoid abrasive pads entirely, which dull a white surface and leave a patch that catches the light differently from everything around it.

Frequently asked questions

How to anchor furniture to wall
Fix into a stud rather than plasterboard alone, because a plasterboard fixing pulls through under exactly the load that matters. Use the bracket and screws supplied with the cabinet, and fit the strap taut rather than slack, since a loose strap only acts once the cabinet has already started to tip. Many cabinets in this range include the hardware. On masonry use a wall plug rated for the weight, and keep the heaviest contents on the lowest shelf.
How to anchor furniture to wall without drilling
There is no adhesive fixing that reliably holds a loaded tall cabinet, so the honest answer is to change the load rather than fake the fixing. Keep the top shelf empty or light, put the heaviest items lowest, and choose a wider, shallower cabinet over a tall narrow one where the wall cannot be drilled. In a rental, ask about a stud fixing first: a single screw hole is a smaller matter than a cabinet going over.
How to assemble storage cabinet
Build it lying down where the instructions allow, because a tall carcass squares far more easily on the floor than upright, then stand it with a second person. Leave every fixing finger-tight until the carcass is complete, check it is square across the diagonals, then tighten. Fit the shelves at the spacing you need before loading it. Anchor it to the wall before anything goes in, not afterwards.
How to adjust cabinet shelves
Empty the shelf, then lift it clear of its supports rather than sliding it, which is what scores a finish or bends a shelf lip. Move the clips or brackets to the new slots on both sides and check they sit at the same height before replacing the shelf, since a shelf resting on one clip out of line rocks under load. Set the spacing for the tallest item you are storing and work downward from there.
