Anchoring a narrow storage cabinet

A tall narrow cabinet is the single most tip-prone shape of furniture, because the base is small and a loaded top shelf sits well forward of it. Anchor it to the wall before you fill it, into a stud rather than drywall alone, and put the heaviest items on the lowest shelf.

Where a wall cannot be drilled, keep the top shelf empty or light and choose a wider, shallower cabinet instead. Wipe with a barely damp cloth, and check the door alignment after a few months since a narrow door shows a misaligned hinge more than a wide one does. Most concealed hinges adjust on two screws, one moving the door in and out and one side to side.
