Locking storage cabinets and what a lock is worth

A lock changes what a cabinet is for. Without one you are tidying; with one you are securing, and the difference matters in a shared office, a home office a client walks through, a workshop with tools worth taking, or anywhere records have to be genuinely put away.

Anchor a tall unit to a stud before you fill it, since a loaded top shelf pulls the weight forward and a locked door does nothing about that. Most of these include an anti-tip kit. Keep the key somewhere other than the room the cabinet is in, and label it in a way that means something to you and nothing to anyone else. Wipe steel with a damp cloth and a mild detergent, and keep the lock barrel free of dust so the key turns cleanly.
