Mesh office chairs and staying cool

Mesh moves air. A padded back traps heat against you over a long afternoon, and in a warm room or a south-facing office that is the thing you notice first, before you notice anything about posture or adjustment.

The second advantage is that mesh flexes to your back rather than compressing under it. Foam takes a set over time and stops pushing back where you need it; a tensioned mesh panel keeps its shape for far longer.

Mesh office chair support and adjustment

Most of these carry lumbar support, and it is the adjustment worth having above all others. It fills the hollow of the lower back so the spine keeps its natural curve instead of rounding forward. Ergonomic models add seat height, back angle and armrest adjustment, which is what lets one chair fit two people.

A headrest is on many of them and earns its place once the back reclines: without it a tilted chair leaves your neck unsupported. High-back builds continue past the shoulder blades so the whole back is carried.

Mesh office chair sizing

Heights run 27 to 56.7 inches overall, widths 20.5 to 30.3 and depths 19.7 to 29.1. Measure the space the chair reclines into as well as the footprint under the desk, because a high-back model needs clearance behind it that a low task chair does not.

Set the height so your forearms are level with the desk and your feet are flat on the floor. Mesh needs almost no care: vacuum the panel occasionally and wipe the frame with a damp cloth, and avoid sitting on the edge of the seat, which stretches the front of the mesh unevenly. If the desk is slightly too high, raise the chair and add a footrest rather than lifting your shoulders to reach it.

How to clean office chair
Vacuum a mesh back with a brush attachment to lift dust out of the weave, then wipe it with a cloth wrung out in warm water and a little mild detergent. Do not soak it: water sitting in a tensioned panel takes a long time to dry and can mark the frame. Wipe the base and castors separately, since hair wraps around castor axles and is the usual reason a chair rolls badly.
How to adjust office chair
Set seat height first: lift the lever under the seat on the right with your weight off the chair to raise it, and with your weight on it to lower. Aim for feet flat on the floor and forearms level with the desk. Recline tension is usually a knob under the seat front, and the recline lock is a separate lever. Each listing names the adjustments that chair has.
Why does my office chair keep going down?
A chair that sinks has a failed gas lift cylinder. The cylinder holds pressurised gas to support your weight, and once the seal goes it can no longer hold height. It is not a fault in the seat or the base, and it is not something tightening will fix. The cylinder is a replaceable part on most chairs.
How to make office chair more comfortable
Set the height so your forearms are level with the desk and your feet are flat, then adjust the backrest so the lumbar support meets the small of your back rather than sitting above or below it. If the seat edge presses into the back of your knees, the seat is too deep for you. On a mesh chair, resist over-tightening the recline: some give is what lets the mesh do its job.
