Plastic table covers and what they protect against

A table cover is the cheapest way to stop worrying about a surface. It takes the spills, the heat marks and the scratches that would otherwise land on the table, and it wipes clean rather than needing washing.

That is worth most on a surface you actually use hard: a table doubling as a work bench, a craft surface, a desk somebody eats at, or any table where children are involved. It is worth least on a piece you want to look at, since a cover always reads as a cover.

Table cover sizing and shape

Size it to the top plus whatever overhang you want. A little overhang catches drips at the edge rather than letting them run onto the leg; too much and the cover pulls itself off when someone catches it.

Some of these are cut for L-shaped tops, which is worth checking before ordering, because a rectangular cover on a corner desk leaves the return exposed at precisely the point where the work happens. Measure both arms of the L rather than assuming they match.

Cleaning and storing a table cover

Wipe with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent cleaners, which cloud the surface permanently and leave it looking worse than the table it is protecting. Lift the cover occasionally and let the table underneath breathe, since a surface kept permanently sealed can trap moisture against the finish.

Store a cover rolled rather than folded. A fold sets a crease that will not flatten out and turns into a weak line that eventually splits, while a rolled cover relaxes flat within a day of being laid out. If a new cover will not sit flat, leave it in a warm room overnight rather than trying to press it.
